About the Book

In the summer of 1942, when Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands lives down the road from his family's house in Massachusetts, young William decides to engage in "peace work" and take her some of the blueberries he has picked, ignoring his family's assurances that he would never be allowed to see the queen. (Note: The events in the story are based on an actual incident in John Paterson's childhood.)

John and Katherine Paterson have collaborated on two previous books. Katherine has twice received both the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. She has written books for nearly every age, including picture books such as The King's Equal, "I Can Read" books such as Marvin One Too Many, and novels such as The Bridge to Terabithia and Jacob Have I Loved. Residents of Barre, Vermont, the Patersons have four grown children and seven grandchildren.

Susan Jeffers is the Caldecott Honor artist of over thirty-five well-loved children's books, including the New York Times bestseller Brother Eagle, Sister Sky. She has collaborated with Rosemary Wells on the classic McDuff books, and her work has been displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Norman Rockwell Museum.
